We are the men and women of Sprinkler Fitters Local 704 What we do: We install, inspect, service and repair fire protection systems. From the underground water main to the overhead fire sprinkler, be it a one day job or a multi year construction project, we do it all, and we do it right the first time. Our Journeymen, apprentices and our union contractors work as a team, we finish the job on time and on budget. Where we're going: Because of the changing industry demands placed upon our members and contractors, Local 704 members are provided with the latest information and installation techniques through our apprenticeship training and journeyman upgrade programs, this enables us to help our contractors put forth a quality product in a timely manner. No matter what new demands and changes the industry places upon us, our members are uniquely qualified to do the job and will be leading the way.

Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice


A rewarding career awaits you as a Local 704 Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice.  We will train you on all aspects of the Sprinkler Fitting Industry.  This life and property saving industry is of vital importance to everyone throughout Detroit and our surrounding counties of jurisdiction. 

You will go through 7,780 hours of On the Job Training coupled with 720 hours of "in the classroom" training:  Throughout your apprenticeship you will be employed by signatory contractors to achieve your on-the-job hours.  There you will work under direct supervision of 704 journeyworkers.

You will be taught to:

  • Apply skills learned in the classroom to the field.
  • Delve deeper into installation codes.
  • Fire protection valves
  • Fire pumps
  • Backflow installation and testing w/Certification
  • Solder and Braze training
  • Oxy-acetylene
  • Light welding
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • CPR/AED Certification 

Requirements

Applications are accepted on-line from January 1st at 8am to September 30th at 12noon each year.  To apply, click on the link below.  Once you apply, you will need to upload required documents within 31 days of submitting your application.  The link to the document submission portal will be emailed to you with your confirmation email that you've successfully submitted an application.

The following are the documents:

  • Drivers License (Required)
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (GED) and official report of test results (Required)
  • Resume (Optional)
  • Certificates, Diploma Cards, Letters of Recommendation, etc. (Optional)

Once we have all of your information, you will be notified with the next Apprenticeship exam.  The exams are held in May, August and November each year.  Upon successful completion of the exam, you will then be called in for an interview.  Upon successful acceptance by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee you will be place onto a list to begin your apprenticeship. 

An accepted applicant could generally be on the list anywhere from 2 months to excess of a year before being hired and actually beginning their on-the-job and in-the-classroom hours.
